Living Things and Habitats
What is it
Children learn to explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead and never alive, and to identify that most living things live in habitats suited to their needs, giving simple examples of how a habitat provides food and shelter.
Why it matters
Understanding that living things depend on their surroundings is the foundation for ecosystems and food chains, topics that return in far greater depth at KS2, KS3 and GCSE.
Exam tip
Practise the three-way sort — living, dead, never alive — with everyday examples (a tree, a fallen leaf, a rock); this exact classification is a very common question format.
